Pleached Hornbeam Planting

Our Supply and Plant team, Tim and Alex, have recently completed a planting job in Dorchester-on-Thames. The client kindly replied to say that they had done a "magnificent job. They worked hard in miserably cold weather and left the site looking immaculate. Thank you for supplying such splendid trees and for the excellent planting service..."

It is very rewarding for the team when we hear back from another satisfied customer!

Fuel for Woodfuel Boiler

Back in May, Colin Finlay blogged about our woodfuel boiler which has been providing heat for all our buildings here at Nicholsons. We have never been so warm in the offices! The boiler has a diet of chipped wood waste which has not only eliminated the need for oil but is helping to reduce our waste at the yard. The video shows footage of waste wood, mainly unusable pallets, being munched up by a large chipper for fuel for the boiler.

Gardeners' Question Time comes to Nicholsons! We were delighted last Monday to welcome Pippa Greenwood to Nicholsons. She was recording for the intro to the GQT that will be broadcast from Kidlington see the link below. Without wanting to give too much away hedges in all their shapes and forms proved to be a good topic of conversation. Liz Nicholson, Director, and Merlin Brooke-Little, Nursery Manager, pictured, waxed lyrical for about an hour and will likely be edited down to 6 mins! (Come to the nursery for the live uncut version!) Pippa Greenwood and her producer / editor Howard were a delight to entertain and it was fascinating to see a professional broadcaster in action. Tune in if you can this coming Friday 19th October at 3pm or repeated on Sunday at 2pm.

A Batty Blog

We recently undertook a bat survey of a heavily diseased Beech tree prior to it being dismantled by our arborists.  Located in an area of parkland, the tree had a lot of cavities, deadwood and cracks where bats like to roost.
All bats and their roosts are protected by law, whether the roosts are occupied or not. It is therefore accepted that as a minimum standard, a visual inspection of trees is carried out on trees with bat potential before any work is undertaken.
A detailed aerial inspection of trees by non-climbing bat workers is often perceived to be impractical and too costly. However, Nicholsons arboriculturists have the skills to access trees efficiently and have undergone specialist training with Bat Conservation Trust to undertake these surveys, and ensure any work is carried out within the law.
